I live in an area by a lake and the lightning strikes are often and large. Several neighbors have used whole house surge protectors and they never worked. Set your electronics up so that you can disconnect easily and often. If a storm is approaching unplug, if you go on vacation unplug. it is a pain but it will at least minimize your chances of burning everything up.
