Chamber of Commerce Fire Incident Discussion

The Chamber of Commerce convened on January 15, 2026, to discuss critical concerns following the fire incident that occurred on December 31, 2025. The meeting focused on strengthening fire preparedness, improving infrastructure, and enhancing collaboration between businesses and emergency services to reduce future risks.

One of the key topics discussed was the need to improve water storage capacity at the Fire Station compound. Members emphasized that adequate water supply is essential for effective fire response. Southern Cross Company was identified as a potential partner to supply water tanks, which would significantly enhance readiness during emergencies.

The condition of existing fire hydrants within the town was also highlighted. While hydrants are already in place, several are currently non-operational due to blockages and damage caused by accumulated rubbish. Members stressed the importance of regular maintenance and proper waste management to ensure hydrants remain accessible and functional when needed.

Another strong recommendation from Chamber members was the installation of a Southern Cross water tank at the bus terminal area. Given its high-traffic nature, having immediate access to water in this location would allow faster response times during fire emergencies and help protect both businesses and the public.

Concerns were also raised regarding low water pressure in the Warakum area. Improving water pressure in this location was identified as a priority to support firefighting efforts and minimize potential damage during incidents.

In addition to infrastructure improvements, the Fire Station unit announced the availability of fire safety training for interested companies. The training, offered at a fee of 400 Kina per participant, allows businesses to nominate staff members to gain essential fire prevention and response skills.

A follow-up meeting on this matter is scheduled for March 2026, where progress and further action plans will be discussed. The Chamber remains committed to working collaboratively to enhance fire safety and protect the local business community.
