Computer Mouse Evolution In GUI

Have you ever wonder, what if a computer mouse wasn’t invented? And why is it called a mouse?

As early as 1964 the first mouse prototype is made of a wooden shell with two metal wheels. It had a cord attached to the rear part of the device which look like a tail, in turn resembles a common mouse.

Douglas Engelbart was the inventor of the computer mouse. He is best known for his work on founding the field of human-computer interaction at his Augmentation Research Center Lab in SRI International. Born on January 30, 1925 at Portland, Oregon. U.S.A. His alma mater is in Oregon State University & University of California, Berkeley.

He was an American Engineer & created the device to function as an X-Y position indicator for a display system. The two metal discs could control the X-Y position but had limited practical users. These wheels could only move on particular surfaces, so the design was improved by Bill English,he introduce the first ball mouse. The first production workstation and mouse were made in 1967.

In 1973 Xerox Alto was the first modern computers designed for individual to use a mouse. Then Sun-1 also came with mouse and the fortcoming Apple Lisa. In 1982, Logitech introduced the P4 Mouse at the Comdex trade show in Las Vegas, its first hardware mouse. That same year Microsoft made the decision to make the MS-DOS program Microsoft Word mouse-compatible, and developed the first PC-compatible mouse.

The first cordless mouse was in September 1984 with Metaphor computer of David Liddle & Donald Masaro, a former Xerox PARC engineers. It has a cordless keyboard and function of keypad.

Today, mouse is in different form and functions with its ergonomic features and design it is still widely used in Information technology computing eventhough computer pads, touchscreens are introduce to interact with graphical interface.
