On September 16, 2026, the coastal town of Alotau came alive with vibrant colors, rhythmic beats, and immense national pride as Milne Bay gathered to mark Papua New Guinea’s 51st Independence Anniversary. Organized through the leadership of the Milne Bay Tourism Bureau and supported by local corporate partners—including Able Computing (Able Home & Office)—the three-day celebration brought together government departments, local businesses, schools, and cultural groups from across the region.
A Dawn of Unity: Chauka Call and the Grand Parade

The main event on September 16 kicked off in the early morning at 4:30 AM with the traditional Chauka call by the Manus Cultural Group. By 7:00 AM, the streets were filled with energy as the official Independence March got underway. Led by the CIS, Police Force, and Milne Bay Provincial Administration Security, the procession featured contingents from local schools, churches, NGOs, and local business houses marching in step.

The formal ceremonies began with the sounding of the conch shell, the hoisting of the National Flag led by the Boy and Girl Scouts, and a unified recitation of the National Pledge.
Strong Leadership & Inspiring Words
The official ceremony featured key addresses from prominent provincial figures:
-
Deputy Mayor Hon. Teddy Tobie provided the opening Welcome Remarks.
-
Hon. Ricky Morris, MP (Member for Alotau) delivered the Keynote Address.
-
Deputy Governor Hon. Matthew Magiuodi delivered the Governor’s Address to the crowd.
Harmonious choir performances by the Alotau United Church, SDA Church, and Kwato Church echoed across the venue between speeches, adding a spiritual touch to the morning. Following the addresses, a colorful Float Parade featuring local government sectors and private businesses showcased community creativity.

Cultural groups representing Kaikuwali Theatre, Central (Kairuku), Dinibon, Wepalala, Salakadi Kunika, Manus, Kitava, Morobe, Ipasusu, AROB, Palipe, and Geyodi performed traditional dances showcasing Papua New Guinea’s rich diversity.
